In the ancient pre-Columbian belief system, birds held a special significance as creatures of the sky, acting as intermediaries between humanity and the celestial gods. Shamans would often engage in rituals where they transformed into birds and other animals to harness their divine powers. This pendant likely symbolizes a shaman undergoing a transformative experience. The presence of a basket in the design signifies a state of fullness and prosperity. Originating from the pre-Colombian era in Central America, specifically from the Guanacaste/Nicoya region of Costa Rica, it dates back to around 200-600 CE.
